The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
